Riga Students will Investigate the System of Municipal Services of Riga

On September 18, 2015, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Riga Purvciems Secondary School in collaboration with the International Association of Experts in Children Education on High Technologies (IAECEHT) supported by the Riga City Council Department of Education, Culture and Sports will pilot the business game “Journalist – a Mirror of Riga” for secondary school students.

“Not only people get the benefit from looking in the mirror, but also a city. We have invited the students to visit Riga Municipality enterprises (and the ones linked to it) “Rīgas satiksme” LLC, JSC “Rīgas siltums”, JSC “Rīgas Centrāltirgus”, “Rīgas ūdens” LLC, “Getliņi EKO” LLC. As a result, the students will get the opportunity to learn how to ensure and maintain the functioning of the capital and to come up with a journalistic article afterward”, explains the IAECEHT expert and one of the organizers of the event, Mikhail Epstein.

Apart from Riga Purvciems Secondary School, the project engages Riga Secondary Schools No 34, 80 and 40, as well as Rinuzi Secondary School.

The project involves three game cycles. Each of them would address a specific topic related to urban management or social and cultural life of the city. Thus, the students have the opportunity to become an apprentice reporter, a columnist, an editor or public relations expert. Their works will be evaluated by the experienced journalists and the best works will be later published on the portals Mixnews.lv, Freecity.lv and in other media.

This is the second time the event is held in Riga. “Last year, a number of high-tech companies entered into this encouraging collaboration. The entrepreneurs are satisfied with the results and intend to continue the cooperation. For instance, “WMT Baltic” LLC has invited our students to a summer internship and “Mass Portal” LLC has installed a 3D-printer in the school”, Riga Purvciems Secondary School principal, Yuri Klyukin, reported.
